Global Development Group – Emergency Relief

Jakarta & Banda Aceh, Indonesia

New Years Eve 2004, SSI was contacted by the Global Development Group to deploy a mobile broadcast system in Banda Aceh and Jakarta to assist emergency relief in Indonesia.

By an odd twist of fate SSI had a technician on the ground in Indonesia at the time of the tsunami. We were proud to be able to offer some assistance with the relief effort. The devastation was unimaginable to the entire SSI team and being able to lend our expertise and make a difference.

SSI was able to put all the equipment together and have it ready to load onto a relief plane witin a week. Satellite equipment typically comes with month-long lead times but our suppliers stepped up and delivered the equipment within the space of a week. It was an amazing team effort that made this possible.

Satellite networks were deployed in both Banda Aceh and Jakarta to enable relief workers and other Non Government Organizations (NGO's) to access the Internet and utilize Voice Over IP technologies in order to improve communications with the rest of the world, and to assist with coordination of aid within the Country.

GDG handled the majority of the logistics and ground support getting the essential equipment onto relief flights and into the country. SSI handled the deployment of the network and managed it from our satellite uplink facility in Sweden, and network operations center in Yellowknife.

As a company, we really do care about the impact our work can have. In this case, we were able to assist with the recovery efforts in a disaster zone. If the situation arose again, we would happily lend our expertise to those in need.
