Company History

Company HistorySSi Micro Ltd. was founded in Fort Providence, a small community of eight hundred people located in the Northwest Territories of Canada. A company deeply rooted in the North, we understand first hand the importance of reliable communications in remote and rural communities. That personal connection has been a driving force behind why we love what we do and why we do it.

At home in Northern Canada our award winning network serves fifty-six remote Northern communities with a satellite network and wireless broadband services. This network serves a population of 29,000 people dispersed over 2 million square miles.

Overseas we have provided communications services to non-profit organizations such as Care International, building infrastructure in Africa and Indonesia where affordable voice and data solutions were desperately needed. We have also built infrastructure in Kiribati, a country located in the central South Pacific.

Over the past two years we have built a network for the Government of Nunavut that spans twenty-six communities across the territory. We have also designed two new services, both optimized for satellite-based communities. Both services involve a significant amount of software development. The first is a file sharing service called Qfile and the second is a voice and video conferencing solution called Meet Online.

In 2012 we opened a new state of the art co-location facility in Kanata, Ontario and have a project lined up in Barbados.  There are many things on the SSi “want to do” check list. The quest for the next great thing, with the devoted goal of improving and providing affordable communications solutions across the globe, is always a high priority. Watch for more news! There is always something new on the horizon for SSi.
