Satellite Infrastructure Technician

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Manager, Satellite Network Operations Center, and working in a team environment, the incumbent will provide installation, monitoring and support services on satellite based communication networks.

SPECIFIC DUTIES - Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

1. Monitoring of the network on a 7 day x 24 hour basis;
2. Provide technical support to corporate and private users;
3. Insure that all equipment is operating within manufactures specifications and is properly calibrated;
4. Provide system operational feedback to the manager on an ongoing basis;
5. Adhere to safe and effective operating procedures and safety measures that are trained, written or posted in the work place or on site, and
6. Other duties may be assigned to support the Satellite Networks Operations Centre and members of the Centre's team.
7. Responsible for all aspects of the maintenance and upkeep of SSI Micro's satellite network. This includes:

• Scheduled and as required remote management and repairs of various satellite equipment,
• Scheduled and as required hardware and software maintenance,
• Scheduled and as required hardware and software upgrades,
• Security reviews and implementation,
• Provide performance and reliability reporting and testing,
• Writing, development and organization of documentation for assigned procedures, and
• Research and implementation of new hardware / software.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED - to be successful in this position, the incumbent should have proven experiences demonstrating:

1. Recent experience with satellite networks including experience with technologies such as TDMA, DVB, Frame Relay, TCP/IP;
2. A strong working knowledge of satellite hardware and components and their interaction (satellite modems, transmitters, block up/down converters, DVB encoders/receivers, combiners/splitters, cisco routers and switches);
3. A strong understanding of communications via satellite and the problems associated with such communication;
4. Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking and Internet services an asset;
5. Skills administering of FreeBSD, Linux and other similar servers an asset;
6. Knowledge or willingness to train in the maintenance of IP and wireless networks;
7. Experience in the assembly of satellite dishes, towers and antennas or a willingness to learn;
8. Strong interest and aptitude in computer and Internet technologies;
9. Strong written and verbal communication skills;
10. Flexible in terms of working hours and available to be on call;
11. Have or be able to obtain a minimum of a valid NWT Class 5 driver's license;
12. Ability to plan and organize one's own activities independently;
13. Ability to work and complete tasks without supervision, and
14. Willingness to travel both domestically and abroad an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands -The incumbent spends considerable time in an office environment and will be working with computer components and related equipment as well as satellite infrastructure and electronic components. Some travel may be involved locally or within the NWT to assist team with maintenance services.

Environmental Conditions - The incumbent works in a generally comfortable office work environment.

Sensory Demands - As is typically found in an office environment.

Mental Demands - The incumbent must work on a multiple tasks/projects concurrently usually involving 2 - 4 members on a team. Frequent interruptions (in person or phone), overlapping demands and tight or fast timeline may result in a significant level of stress. The incumbent will have frequent contact with other team members and office staff. The incumbent must remain calm and controlled while being emphatic and compassionate. Potential to become frustrated in resolving problems some of which are beyond the incumbent's control (e.g., telecommunication problems, connection failures, software problems, etc).
