UNIX Administrator

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Manager, Satellite Network Operations Center, and working in a team environment, the incumbent will provide maintenance, monitoring, and upkeep services for UNIX servers.

SPECIFIC DUTIES - Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  1. Provide system operational feedback to the manager on an ongoing basis;
  2. Adhere to safe and effective operating procedures and safety measures that are trained, written or posted in the work place or on site, and
  3. Other duties may be assigned to support the Satellite Networks Operations Centre and members of the Centre's team.
  4. Responsible for the following aspects of UNIX server administration over several platforms (primarily FreeBSD and Linux):
  • Scheduled and as required hardware and software maintenance,
  • Scheduled and as required hardware and software upgrades,
  • Security reviews and implementation,
  • Provide performance and reliability reporting and testing,
  • Disaster recovery planning and regular backups,
  • Writing, development and organization of documentation for assigned procedures, and
  • Research and implementation of new hardware / software.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED - to be successful in this position, the incumbent should have proven experiences demonstrating:

  1. Solid understanding of FreeBSD and Linux operating systems
  2. Recent experience with Sendmail, Apache, OpenLDAP, BIND, and MySQL.
  3. Experience in OS hardening, system security and auditing;
  4. Knowledge of scripting and programming languages (sh, perl, C for example - others would be an asset);
  5. Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking (routing, switching, network security practices);
  6. Knowledge or willingness to train in the maintenance of fixed wireless and satellite based networks. This includes RF transmitters, RF receivers, VSAT systems, telephone circuits and related devices, CISCO routers and switches, antenna systems, transmitter controller equipment and other related equipment that may be designated;
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  8. Flexible in terms of working hours and available to be on call;
  9. Have or be able to obtain a minimum of a valid NWT Class 5 driver's license;
  10. Ability to plan and organize one's own activities independently;
  11. Ability to work and complete tasks without supervision, and
  12. Willingness to travel both domestically and abroad an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands - The incumbent spends considerable time in an office environment and will be working with computer components and related equipment. Some travel may be involved within the City to the Communications building where our server farm is located.

Environmental Conditions - The incumbent works in a generally comfortable office work environment.

Sensory Demands - As is typically found in an office environment.

Mental Demands - The incumbent must work on a multiple tasks/projects concurrently usually involving 2 - 4 members on a team. Frequent interruptions (in person or phone), overlapping demands and tight or fast timeline may result in a significant level of stress. The incumbent will have frequent contact with other team members and office staff. The incumbent must remain calm and controlled while being emphatic and compassionate. Potential to become frustrated in resolving problems some of which are beyond the incumbent's control (e.g., telecommunication problems, connection failures, software problems, etc).
