Lift in update
1.1 date - The lift-in is scheduled for this Sunday, June 6, weather permitting. If the weather prevents lift-in this Sunday, it will be re-scheduled to the following weekend.
1.2 insurance concerns - We have only received proof of insurance from a small percentage of our membership. I have spoken to some people who are working on getting insurance, but I suspect there are many members who have insurance but have not yet provided proof of insurance and declaration of value to the GSCC board. The easiest thing for us is to have the documents scanned and emailed to us, but I understand this may not be easiest for some of you. We will accept proof of insurance up to the day of lift-in. It is important that everyone provide these documents as soon as possible so no uninsured boats are blocking other boats on lift-in day. If you need me to re-send you the information about insurance and the template for declaration of value, let me know.
Some people have heard that Territorial Crane is willing to be flexible about insurance. There is some truth in this, but the Great Slave Cruising Club is not. Our insurance company is still requiring greater coverage from our membership and in partnership with Territorial Crane`s insurance. Also, we have been fortunate that nothing bad has happened at lift-in, but we cannot continue to assume this risk indefinitely. Therefore we are still requiring proof of insurance from members prior to lift-in. In the near future, we will be extending this requirement to all boats stored on or using our leased property even if no lift-in is required.
1.3 fees - The 2010 Membership fees are now due by all members. The Membership Fee is $300, for those that will be storing their boat through the winter there is also a $100 Storage Fee. Lift-In Fee is $125 per boat.
1.4 access road - It's in bad shape. We're hoping to get it smoothed out before lift in for those who are bringing boats in on trailers for lift in.
1.5 other details - There will be some morning refreshments (coffee, donuts, muffins) provided at lift-in as well as a BBQ at the end of the day. Please make yourself available all day to make sure your boat is ready when the crane gets to you and also so you can help others as needed. In the last couple of years, Albert has started at the end of the boatyard occupied by Jaqmar, Talisker, Sea Bear, Pendragon, etc and finished over by Yola and Red Shift. This not a guarantee, as Albert can decide whatever he wants depending on the weather, but it is something to keep in mind. Please don't bring small children if you have any choice; if you don't have a choice, make sure they are well supervised at all times for their own safety. Please don't bring dogs, as these are a distraction to the crane operator and others working around their boats and it also puts the dogs in danger.
2. Yard condition - I haven't spent much time at the boatyard lately because I've been away, but I hear it's a mess. I hear the dog waste is a particular problem. We are working on getting a new dumpster, which should help; in the meantime, please do your best to pack out your garbage and pick up litter etc whenever you can. Also, if you bring your dog, I know you might not know where he or she left a present but it's safe to say one got left, so keep things in balance by picking up a pile of dog poop even if you don't know if it was left by your own dog. There was a shovel and bucket in front of the club house last season, I don't know if it's still there but you can figure something out. At least flick it in the bushes with a stick so nobody walks in it.
3. Yard security - Once again, the gate is being left open on a regular basis. We might as well advertise the boatyard as another salvage cell at the city dump. I have heard of one Coleman stove stolen so far this year, there will certainly be more if people don't lock the gate. If you know you're going to be working around the yard, it doesn't matter - unless you're going to stop working on your boat every time someone comes in and introduce yourself and get the person's life story, LOCK THE GATE. Dwayne and I lost an expensive outboard motor last year while someone was in the yard, so this is a bit of a sore point. Dinghies, motors, jerry cans, and barbecues are all favourites for thieves.
4. Ability Cup - There may be a change to the date. I hope to have that confirmed within the next 24-48 hours. Either way, I hope people have been thinking about fundraising ideas!
5. Volunteers wanted - We have ideas for how we might be able to rebuild our dock, but we need some volunteers to help. Specifically, we are looking for someone with some environmental expertise to help research the potential environmental impact of different options so we can make a case for the best option to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the City of Yellowknife. We have an idea of what we think is best, but we need more solid information. We would like to start on this within the next couple of months so we can move forward with the process.
We are also looking for someone with some experience with landscape architecture or something similar to help us with conceptual drawings for what the GSCC land could look like in 10 years if we were able to work in partnership with the City, DFO, Giant Mine remediation etc to really do something with the area. We have some ideas, but nothing is written in stone. We just want something visual that might help to inspire other groups to work with us.

1. Ability Cup
The Ability Cup is scheduled for Saturday, June 27. This event is a fundraiser for the NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities and includes both a speed race and a money race - the boat that raises the most money wins the cup.
I'm attaching the following documents:
Pledge Form - the form needed to keep track of all the money you're raising for the NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities
Info - answers to (hopefully!) everything you might want to know about the event
Poster - a copy of this year's poster - designed for 11 x 17 paper but it might print okay on letter sized paper too. If you want to have some 11 x 17 posters to display anywhere, please let us know.
Brochure - background information about the NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities
If you have any questions, please let me know.
2. Membership fees
Annual membership fees are due at the time of lift in, whether your boat is lifted in or on a trailer. The standard membership fee is $300/boat per year. If you were not at lift-in on June 13 or if you missed paying your annual membership fee, please do so as soon as possible. For this and for information about other membership options such as affiliate memberships, contact Purser Terry Brookes email at "terryb @ theedge.ca" (no spaces).
3. Member survey
In order to focus our attention - and funds - on the areas that matter most to our membership, we need to know what those areas are. We have created a member survey to get your input. You can respond in one of several ways:
- Click this link and complete the survey online in minutes:
Survey
- Complete the survey at the clubhouse (blank copies have been left on site) and leave your survey in the cardboard box in the clubhouse. I will be emptying the box periodically.
- Complete the attached form ("GSCC Membership Survey.doc") and return it by email or fax (873-8197 - Jan's work fax).
The more people who answer, the better we can serve you. Once we have sufficient replies, I will summarize the responses and send the summary to the membership (no personally-identifying information will be distributed).

We are moving to Quebec and can't take her with us. We brought this boat up in 2004. Since then we boat new genoa, new main, new VHF, alcohol stove, barbeque, swim ladder, cockpit railing, compass, batteries, sail cover, dodger, cockpit cushions. It has a 7hp gas inboard that works great. This is a great East Arm cruiser! Asking $15,000. Call Darren or Marie-Claude at 873-2005 or email darren@theedge.ca.
This boat has a shoal keel that allows you to sail the inside passage and get into shallow anchorages. It is on a newer trailer that was built for it. Put in and take out when you please. It also comes with mooring if the ice didn't take it.
