CFNAHQ Report on Investigation of UFO Incident -
Fort Resolution, NT - 10 Jan 96

Ref: Unusual Incident Report CFNAHQ G3 Air 500 091815Z Jan 96

1. At the request of the major of Fort Resolution, NT, Comd CFNAHQ undertook a visit to the hamlet. The express purpose of the visit was to investigate the reliability of the reports received (detailed at ref, orignials enclosed) from community inhabitants who had sighted a UFO in the vicinity of the hamlet. In addition, a copy was made of a video taken on the fourth of January of the event.

2. CFNAHQ personnel conducting the investigation:

a. Col J.G.P. Leblanc, Comd;

b. WO R.C. Nickerson, G2; and

c. aircrew of 440 Squadron CC138/Twin Otter

3. Sequence of investigation and details of trip were as follows:

a. CC138 with Comd and G2 departed Yellowknife Airport 101510 (local) Jan 96;

b. team arrived in vicinity of reported sightings SW Fort Resolution approximately 1540 hrs. (local);

c. team flew perimeter of Resolution Bay (vicinity of sightings) from S to N, landing in Fort Resolution approximately 1620 hrs (local);

d. Comd and G2 met by the mayor, Mr. Euan Hunter, at the Fort Resolution Airport;

e. Mayor transported Comd and G2 into the hamlet to meet with name blacked out who had taken the video of the UFO. Mr. name blacked out allowed G2 to make a copy of the original tape;

f. Mr. name blacked out had two hamlet residents who had witnessed similiar phenomena come in to talk to us about the sightings (Mr. name blacked out and Mr. name blacked out);

g. Mayor transported Comd, G2 and Mr. name blacked out to the point where he had taped the event on 04 Jan 96; h. Comd and G2 visited RCMP Cst. Kokesch;

i. Mayor transported Comd and G2 back to the airstrip at approx 1810 hrs local;

j. team flew perimeter of Resolution Bay N to S vicinity reported sightings (approx 1820 to 1840 hrs); and

k. CC138 returned to Yellowknife, landing at approx 1910 hrs.

4. Details of investigation of sighting investigation are as follows:

a. investigation flight was conducted at time of day of reported sightings; nothing of significance was observed by team on 10 Jan 96;

b. video camera used for filming object was "Goldstar VHS-HQ" with an 8 power lens and an auto focus capability;

c enhancement of the video image may discern the shoreline at Fort Resolution and fauna which was present. As the camera was hand held, this could provide a reference in order to discern movement/lack of movement of the object;

d. the video image was taken at an approximate SSW direction from the shoreline of Resolution Bay (Great Slave Lake) immediately in front of the hamlet of Fort Resolution at approximately 1800 hrs local time;

e. the RCMP member at Fort Resolution, Cst. Kokesch, indicated that the people reporting the sighting were reliable, credible witnesses. He had, however, some reservation as to how the interviews were conducted and that the information may be slanted somewhat due to this (see Cst. Kokesch's fax, enclosed);

f. the video was taken by Mr. name blacked out, General Delivery, Fort Resolution and he is retaining the original. His home phone is number blacked out. Mr. name blacked out is also a Canadian Ranger with the Fort Resolution patrol; and

g. Mr. James Laroque, the Candian Ranger Sgt. in Fort Resolution, was instrumental in compiling the reports from the various community members. His training in reporting and attention to detail are evident in the reports;

5. As of 12 Jan 96, media attention has included a local CBC short radio interview. This concentrated on what action the military had taken following the reports.
