As per our telephone conversation on January 17th, 1996 here is the occurrence in brief.
At 0810 AM on January 17th, 1996 name blacked out, Hay River, NT. name blacked out
reported what he believed to be a sighting of a flare our over Great Slave Lake.
name blacked out noted the "flare" descending from the sky at an angle to the ground and
described it as a bright light with a red tail that appeared to be falling apart. Mr. name blacked out
has seen meteorites and does not think that this occurrence was a meteorite. Mr. name blacked out
said the object appeared to be very slow moving and due to the thick ice fog that morning felt the
object was within one kilometre from where he was.
Our office contacted fisheries and oceans and coast guard and employees checked along the road
near the lake and a bombardier was sent out onto the lake in the area of the sighting however
nothing was located. The sighting was not explained but thought possible to be a meteorite.
Trusting this is satisfactory.
Sincerely,
(B.D. WENTZELL), Cst.
