In actuality, Grandma Reimer was taken from us slowly but surely 15 years ago when she began to suffer the devastating effects of Alzheimer's Disease. A degenerative neurological disorder for which there is no known prevention or cure, it is estimated that there are 300,000 Canadians stricken by the disease who's reach extends far beyond those directly affected. By the year 2033, 30% of Canada's population will be over the age of 65 and, with an aging population, the potential impact of Alzheimer disease is staggering. The disease occurs in 2% to 3% of the general population over the age of 60, and in more than 20% of those over 80. There are many cases in which people in their 50's have been diagnosed. Before long, one in three families will be affected by the disease, and this incidence is expected to increase significantly if no cure or form of prevention is found.
